Enterprise Development and Entrepreneurship Promotion Program

GIZ in partnership with Stanbic Kenya Foundation invites Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Blue Economy Sector and operating within the Coastal Regions (Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Lamu and Mombasa) to apply for Access to Finance and MSME training to support them to grow their businesses.

Program Background

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is one of the implementing partners of the European Union (EU) Coastal Economic Development in Kenya” Action, the so-called “Go Blue” Initiative. The EU Action is based on a partnership between the EU and the Government of Kenya (GoK) to advance the Blue Economy Agenda through coastal development. The GIZ project is one component of the EU Action and mainly contributing to its Specific Objective of: “Strengthened inclusive and sustainable blue economy value chains.” This multi-donor action is jointly co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ.

The overall objective of the EU Action is to contribute to coastal economic development in an inclusive, integrated, participatory and sustainable manner. The specific objective of the GIZ engagement is to strengthen inclusive and sustainable blue economy value chains through skills development and matching, aquaculture value chain development, and MSME support.  

The project is an EU co-financing of the regional Employment for Sustainable Development in Africa (E4D) programme in Kenya with results contributing to the overall regional E4D objectives. In this context, GIZ in Kenya seeks to promote employment opportunities of skilled workers through quality, practice-oriented technical and vocational training and encouraging self-employment by investing in entrepreneurs and innovators. 

Call for applications

GIZ in partnership with Stanbic Kenya Foundation invite applications from Micro and Small Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Coastal region i.e., Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Lamu and Mombasa to participate in the Enterprise Development and Entrepreneurship Promotion Program.

The program has two components:

  1. Access to Finance (Zero Interest rate financing)
  2. Capacity Building on: Financial ManagementDigital Literacy |Sales and Marketing | Business Growth Strategies | Improving Business Operations

Eligible MSMEs are invited to apply for either or both components to support them improve competitiveness and enhance their business capacities which ultimately enhances the development of the blue economy sector in Kenya’s Coastal areas.

who is eligible

  • MSMEs that are 100% Kenyan owned and managed
  • The MSMEs need to be legally registered in Kenya and/ in Country of operation as well  as the relevant Government  Authority bodies  in line with their business
  • Must have primary operations in atleast one of the target counties namely: - Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Lamu and/or Mombasa
  • Must have been in operation for at least 2 years
  • Must have KRA registration certificate
  • Must have operations in one or more of the Six target sectors of the program namely: Fisheries and aquaculture | Maritime security | Maritime transportTourism | Logistics | Vessel repair and maintenance
  • Must be Youth-Led/Owned (between 18-35 years) or  Women-led/owned 
  • For Zero interest rate loans, applicants must have received training on enterpreneurship
  • Must be committed to participate in the program
