Steps to register with Chama
Download/Access the Stanbic Chama App
Get the app from the iOS App Store or Android Play Store.
Alternatively, you can access the web application here: https://chama.stanbicbank.co.ke/
Input your details
- Enter your ID number for validation.
- Input your phone number.
Verify your profile
Follow the prompts to verify your profile within the app.
Deposit into your personal wallet
- You can deposit funds via M-PESA, Stanbic Bank, or other banks.
- For M-PESA: Go to ‘Transact’ > ‘My Wallet’ > ‘Deposit’ > ‘Fund Now’, enter the amount, and complete the process.
- For Stanbic Bank: Use your Chama wallet number (starts with 0), select ‘Internal Transfer’ in the Stanbic Mobile Banking App, enter the amount, and confirm.
- For other banks: Select Stanbic Bank as the recipient and follow similar steps
Create or join a chama group
- To create: Tap the blue arrows next to Chama Groups, select ‘Start a New Group’, fill in the details, and choose your group options.
- To join: Tap the ‘Invitations’ button, select ‘Accept Invite’, enter the invitation code received via SMS, accept the terms, and complete the process.
Activate your membership
- Inform your group chair to activate your membership.
- The chair will go to ‘Memberships’ > ‘Requests to join’, select your pending membership, and activate it.
- Once activated, you can view the group on your home page

What is Stanbic Chama?
Stanbic Chama is a digital platform that enables users to create, join, and manage savings groups (Chamas), set personal and group savings goals, and transact securely using their mobile devices.
How do I register for Stanbic Chama?
- Download the Stanbic Chama App from the iOS App Store or Android Play Store or access via the web application.
- Enter your ID number and phone number for validation.
- Verify your profile as prompted in the app.
- Deposit funds into your personal wallet via M-PESA, Stanbic Bank, or other banks
How do I deposit funds into my wallet?
- For M-PESA: Go to ‘Transact’ > ‘My Wallet’ > ‘Deposit’ > ‘Fund Now’, enter the amount, and complete the process.
- For Stanbic Bank: Use your Chama wallet number, select ‘Internal Transfer’ in the Stanbic Mobile Banking App, enter the amount, and confirm.

How do I create a Chama group?
- Tap the blue arrows next to Chama Groups.

How do I invite members to my group?
- Tap the purple icon next to the Group Name.
- Navigate to ‘Memberships’ > ‘Invitations’.
- Tap the + icon to add a member, input their mobile number, and assign a role.
- The user will receive an SMS with an invitation code to join the group
How do I join a Chama group?
- Tap the ‘Invitations’ button at the bottom of the home page.
- Select ‘Accept Invite’ and enter the invitation code received via SMS.
- Accept the terms and select ‘Next’ to complete.
- Inform your group chair to activate your membership
How is membership activated?
- The group chair navigates to ‘Memberships’ > ‘Requests to join’, selects the pending member, and activates them.
- Once activated, the member can view the group on their home page
How do I make a contribution to a group?
- Tap ‘My Wallet’ on the Home Page.
- Go to ‘Transact’ > ‘Contributions payable’.
- Select the group, enter the amount, and complete the process.
- Notification is received for a successful deposit
How do I set up a personal or group savings goal?
- For personal goals: Tap ‘Savings’ or ‘Wallet’ > ‘Goals’, tap the + icon, enter goal details, select Money Market or Interest Goal, set target amount and date, accept terms, and complete.
- For group goals: Only the chair/treasurer can create goals. Tap the blue arrows next to Chama Groups, tap the purple icon, tap the + icon, enter goal details, accept terms, and complete.
How do I deposit into a savings goal?
- For personal goals: Tap ‘Savings’ on the Home Page, tap the Deposit icon, enter amount, and complete.
- For group goals: Open the group, go to ‘Goals’ > ‘View All Goals’, select the goal, tap Deposit, enter amount, and complete. Funds are deducted from the group wallet.
